Winter practice questions, answered

Can you practice at a driving range in winter?

Yes — ranges with covered, heated bays run all winter across the northern US and Canada. Covered stalls keep you dry; heaters (overhead radiant or in-bay) keep hands and grips workable well below freezing. Every range on this page has one or both verified.

What's the difference between covered and heated bays?

Covered means a roof over the hitting line — protection from rain and snow, but winter air. Heated adds radiant heaters or enclosed, warmed bays. In genuinely cold climates the difference matters: look for the Heated tag on listings, and check the listing's hours since some ranges shorten them off-season.

Does cold weather change how far the ball goes?

Meaningfully. Cold air is denser and cold balls compress less — expect roughly 2 yards less carry per 10°F drop with mid-irons, more with driver. Winter range sessions are best spent on strike quality and tempo rather than chasing your summer numbers.

Do grass tees stay open in winter?

Almost never in cold climates — ranges close grass lines in the off-season so turf can recover, moving everyone to mats. Where we know a range's seasonal grass schedule, it's shown on the listing.
